We don\u2019t even know how it works. Most of us know more about how cars run than how we run and it shows. And we treat cars better. And it shows.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply viewed from an engineering perspective, the creator thought of everything, and we have no manmade designs that function as well as the human body. It was designed to do things, lots of things. But over the last three generations we have been doing less and less of what we were made for while spending more and more time staring at a screen.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it isn\u2019t just the design features. The human body is also equipped with internal systems intended to keep the body functioning at a high level for a long time.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Homeostasis<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homeostasis is the self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are programmed to adjust to the challenges of our environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body has its own mechanism to return to a normal state of function, and yet, by any metric, we are defeating our own success mechanism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider this, prescription medicine adjusts one homeostatic mechanism by disrupting another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homeostatic imbalances are associated with diabetes, cancer, dementia, and depression. That long list of potential side-effects they rattle off at the end of those cheery narco ads is telling us exactly that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Bone remodeling<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone remodeling or bone metabolism is a lifelong process where mature bone tissue\u00a0is removed from the skeleton, a process called bone resorption) and new bone tissue is formed (a process called ossification\u00a0or new bone formation).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bones are composed of a balance of minerals and proteins. The minerals provide bones with resistance, strength, and rigidity, while protein gives them flexibility and resistance to fracture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The balance of protein and minerals changes with aging. The mineral content of the bones increases with age, and protein content decreases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remodeling also makes bones thicker at points where muscles place the most stress on them. In other words, using muscles makes bones thicker and stronger.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>The Bones of the Mary Rose<\/b><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a5930b elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"7a5930b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ageingbackwards.org\/wp-content\/plugins\/elementor\/assets\/images\/placeholder.png?w=1140&#038;ssl=1\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d20779 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0d20779\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII\u2019s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. Hundreds of men were trapped on board when the ship sank in the Solent, a strait between the Isle of Wight and mainland Great Britain.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1982, the hull of the ship, its artifacts and the bones of 179 crew members were excavated from the Solent and brought to the surface.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have analyzed the collarbones from 12 men between the ages of 13 and 40 who died on the Mary Rose to see how their tasks on the ship may have shaped the chemistry of their bones. The team also looked for telltale signs of aging and evidence of handedness, or which hand the crew members naturally favored.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis showed that the balance of protein and minerals changes with aging. The mineral content of the bones increases with age, and protein content decreases. The changes were most noticeable in the right collarbones, indicating that the crew members favored their right hands.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although, at that time, being left-handed could get you burned at the stake it does tell us that bone structure is enhanced by use.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAdvancing our knowledge of bone chemistry is crucial for understanding how our skeletons age and how medical conditions effect the bones,\u201d said lead study author Dr. Sheona Shankland, a research associate at the Lancaster Medical School at the UK\u2019s Lancaster University.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnderstanding these changes could allow us to be more informed about fracture risk and on the causes of conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, which are commonly experienced with aging.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting to note therefore that calcium content, which makes bones brittle increases while the protein content, which declines, is what makes bones flexible and resistant to fracture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it possible that older people are breaking bones because they aren\u2019t getting enough protein?<\/span><\/p><p><b>Calcium Supplements are not the answer and are defeating an important health mechanism.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erin Michos associate director of preventive cardiology for the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease said, \u201cA nutrient in pill form is not processed in the body the same way as it is when ingested from a food source. Furthermore, people believe that the proof that calcium supplements fortify bones is more robust than it really is,\u201d she says. \u201cThe truth is, the research is inconclusive. But there is a growing body of evidence that suggests no health benefit, or even worse, that calcium supplements may be harmful.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of heart disease, particularly in healthy, postmenopausal women.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential link to heart attack.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk of kidney stones.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High calcium levels (hypercalcemia) can cause various health issues.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same thing we said about prescription medicine, how it adjusts one homeostatic mechanism by disrupting another.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that there is a no-risk way to supercharge the bone remodeling process, and one can begin at any age.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Cell Replacement<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard that all of the cells in the human body replace themselves in seven years.
