Ageing Backwards

About

I was born in 1948 and I got old.

But I am also a life-long competitive athlete, senior softball national champion and multiple medalist in the Senior Olympics and Senior Games. I am a living experiment in maximum performance and longevity, so it's like I have a Ph.D. in life well-lived.

Bang, bang, bang, bang!
“Four shots ripped into my groin,”
“and I was off on the greatest adventure of my life.”
“But first let me tell you a little about myself.”

The work that came after

02 / The shot heard round my world

One highly touted therapy was a drug called Vioxx. I took it for about three weeks in September of 2001, and then I stopped because it wasn't all that effective.

About 11 AM, January 8, 2002, I had just finished our first softball practice of the new year and was changing my shoes when I felt a little discomfort in my chest. The next thing I knew I was on the ground. Imagine a shotgun blast to the back.

A third of the heart muscle on one side was dead. Five to six years, they said. But something didn't seem right to me. Now, I realize that had I not been so well conditioned, I would have died in the parking lot.

03 / Chronological vs biological age

Biological age is what matters.

Biological age can explain why individuals of the same age have profound differences in capabilities, why some run marathons and scale mountains, while others are riddled with adverse health conditions and require around-the-clock care.

04 / The methodology

Body. Mind. Spirit.

Body.

The body has everything it needs to be healthy, vibrant, and productive for one hundred and twenty years. We have been deliberately ill-informed to the degree that we are actually suppressing those gifts.

“The body is built for this.”

Mind.

When we focus on an idea for a long time, our brain starts noticing related news, information, and opportunities. An affirmation causes you to see your persona the way you intend to. You want the part, you act the part.

“The messages we send ourselves are the most powerful determinate of our reality.”

Spirit.

Our journey through life is limited to what we are capable of: capable of doing, feeling, thinking, enduring, and perhaps most important of all, what we are capable of giving.

“There is no pause button in life. Just growth, or decay.”

06 / Running for mayor

Running for mayor

George has run for public office twice. In 2006 he was runner-up for Mayor of Vista. He wrote his own campaign piece — a report card on the city, with the grades left blank for the reader to fill in.

“I am your neighbor in Central Vista, fast becoming the wrong side of the tracks.”

His three-point plan

  1. Paint Vista

The appearance of a community has a powerful effect on crime, and Vista is only eighteen square miles. “I want us to take back every wall, every fence, every curb, sign, and sidewalk from those who would deface it. And having done that, never give it up again.”

  2. Enforce the municipal code

Too many cars, too many inhabitants, junk, noise, exposed untreated wood — all of it already prohibited by the municipal code. Enforce it consistently.

  3. Equip the sheriff

Three more round-the-clock deputies and two more motorcycle units. That was the figure Vista’s own sheriff’s captain gave him.

A community that looks better and feels safer draws more people, who stay longer and spend more, which draws better shops and services, which raises the sales tax the city collects — and as the place becomes somewhere people want to be, property values rise with it. All without the sales tax increase on the ballot.
